Se le conoce popularmente como alhucema dentada y lavanda dentada, pertenece a la familia Lamiaceae y es originaria de la región mediterránea, Canarias, Madeira y Sureste de Asia.
De adulta es una planta de porte arbustivo, de crecimiento rápido, robusta y algo leñosa que puede superar los 130 centímetros de altura. Rebrota muy bien creando matas con aspecto globoso. Cuando es reproducida por semilla su raíz e pivotante y cuando lo es por esqueje fasciculada. En los dos casos desarrolla numerosas raíces fasciculadas que explorar con eficacia el terreno, sabiendo que no resisten bien el exceso de humedad.
